The Press Institute for Women in the Developing World Hires the Inaugural Class of Citizen Journalists in Chiapas, Mexico!
The Press Institute for Women in the Developing World and its Mexican branch, El Instituto de Prensa para Mujeres de Mexico, announced today that five women in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico have been hired to take part in The Press Institute's inaugural citizen journalism training program.
The first group of trainees to join El Instituto de Prensa para Mujeres de Mexico range in age from 24-38. Some are formally educated, while others have never attended school. They are domestic workers, community activists, teachers, midwives, and young mothers. Each woman is bright, brave, and excited to begin her new career as a journalist. (Bios of each new citizen journalist are available upon request.)
The Press Institute's citizen journalism training program is a six month course. Using an original curriculum that is steeped with ethics and solid journalism techniques, the Institute will edit, coach, and train these five women to cover breaking and feature news in Chiapas. Over the course of their training, each woman will produce articles that will be published on The Press Institute's website, www.piwdw.org. The website will also operate as a newswire so that other media organizations all over the world can reprint the strong, on-the-ground reporting produced by Press Institute reporters.
For interviews, photographs, and more details about the program in Mexico, please contact Cristi Hegranes at 415-516-3012 or cristi@piwdw.org.
