“There are so many things that the world should know. As long as no one knows, nothing will change,” says María Antonieta Gómez Alvarez, a member of the Press Institute for Mexican Women’s first group of citizen journalists.

By bringing attention to women’s experiences and informing the public about often ignored subjects such as womens’ rights and helath concerns, marginalization and poverty, María Antonieta hopes to help women, especially indigenous ones, lead better lives that are free of discrimination.

A leader in her community, María Antonieta is a health promoter who works with traditional midwives and in herbal medicine. For the last 20 years, she has dedicated her life and career to helping women.

During her childhood in Huitiupan, Chiapas, María Antonieta awoke at one a.m. to work in the corn fields, make tortillas, wash diapers, make pozol and take care of other children.

Economic circumstances forced María Antonieta to leave school at an early age. She says that The Press Institute will allow her to keep learning and contributing to the community.
